DEARBORN, Mich., Dec.
23, 2008 – The all-new Ford Fusion
Hybrid is now officially America’s
most fuel efficient mid-size car
with a certified 41 mpg rating in
the city and 36 mpg on the highway,
topping the Toyota Camry hybrid by 8
mpg in the city and 2 mpg on the
highway.
“The new Ford Fusion
Hybrid not only significantly
exceeds the competition but also
embodies Ford’s 100 percent
commitment to fuel efficiency
leadership, quality, innovation and
advanced technology,” said Derrick
Kuzak, group vice president, Global
Product Development. “The Ford team
set the bar high – to develop
America’s most fuel efficient
mid-size sedan – and that’s what
they delivered.”
The 2010 Ford
Fusion’s final fuel economy
certification was completed this
week at Ford’s testing laboratories
in Allen Park, Mich., and the
vehicle will carry an EPA label of
41 mpg for city driving and 36 mpg
on the highway when it goes on sale
this spring. The Fusion Hybrid,
which beats even the much smaller
Honda Civic hybrid by 1 mpg in city
driving, can travel more than 700
miles on a single tank of gas.
To deliver the class
leading fuel economy performance,
Ford’s engineers spent the past
three years developing in-house the
vehicle’s next-generation hybrid
propulsion system. It allows the
Fusion and Mercury Milan hybrid to
travel up to 47 miles per hour in
pure electric mode, faster than the
Toyota Camry and all other hybrids
currently on the road. In addition,
the system’s Advanced Intake
Variable Cam Timing allows the
Fusion and Milan hybrids to more
seamlessly transition from gas to
electric mode and vice-versa.
“The Fusion Hybrid’s
ability to run at a much higher
speed in electric mode allows
drivers to maximize fuel efficiently
in many driving situations,” said
Praveen Cherian, Fusion Hybrid
program leader. “For example, this
would allow drivers to travel around
their subdivision and parking areas
in all-electric mode.”
Fusion’s advanced
hybrid system features:
Smaller, lighter
nickel-metal hydride battery,
which produces 20 percent more
power than Ford’s previous
hybrid system. The battery’s
improved chemistry allows it to
be run at a higher temperature
and cooled using cabin air.
New 2.5-liter
4-cylinder engine (155
horsepower / 136 lb.-ft. of
torque), which is mated to an
electronically controlled
continuously variable
transmission.
Enhanced
electronic throttle control,
which reduces airflow on
shutdowns, reducing fueling
needs on restarts.
Smart climate
control system, which monitors
cabin temperature and only runs
the gas engine as needed to heat
the cabin. It also includes an
electric air conditioning
compressor to further minimize
engine use.
Regenerative
brake system, which captures the
energy normally lost through
friction in braking and stores
it. Nearly 94 percent energy
recovery is achieved by
delivering full regenerative
braking, which means only 6
percent of braking is through
traditional friction brakes
SmartGauge
Teaches Eco-Driving
The new Fusion Hybrid literally
teaches drivers how to make the most
out of their vehicle, thanks to
Ford’s SmartGauge with EcoGuide.
SmartGauge is a unique instrument
cluster that helps coach drivers on
how to optimize the performance of
their hybrid.
SmartGauge with
EcoGuide features two,
high-resolution, full-color liquid
crystal display screens on either
side of the vehicle’s speedometer.
The screens can be configured to
show different levels of driver
information, including fuel and
battery power levels, and average
and instant miles-per-gallon.
When set in tutorial
mode, the instrument panel “grows”
leaves and vines on-screen to reward
fuel-efficient driving. The more
leaves and vines that appear, the
more efficient the driving behavior
is and the more fuel is being saved.
In some recent tests, automotive
journalists have reported exceeding
50 mpg with the Fusion Hybrid.
The Ford Fusion
Hybrid also is distinct on the
outside with Ford’s “road and leaf”
badges on both sides and the rear,
unique 17-inch, eight-spoke wheels,
and a unique engine cover. On the
inside, Fusion Hybrid features
eco-friendly seat fabric made from
post-industrial 100 percent recycled
materials and a standard 110-volt
power outlet.
Fusion
Gasoline Model Also a Fuel Leader
In addition to the hybrid, Fusion
will be offered with three
fuel-efficient gasoline engines –
the Duratec 2.5-liter I-4 and
enhanced 3.0-liter flex-fuel V-6 and
3.5-liter V-6 Duratec engines.
Fusions equipped with the 2.5-liter
I-4 engine are expected to deliver
at least 3 mpg better on the highway
than the Honda Accord and 2 mpg
better than the Toyota Camry. The
new Fusion will be building off the
strong quality reputation of the
current model, which has gained
important third-party accolades, and
will offer class-exclusive features,
including Ford SYNC™, SIRIUS®
TravelLink™, BLIS™ (Blind Spot
Information System) with Cross
Traffic Alert and Sony-branded
audio.
In addition to the
Fusion, several other Ford vehicles
are fuel-economy standouts on the
road today. They include:
The Ford Focus
with 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine
and manual transmission delivers
35 mpg on the highway, 5 mpg
better than the Toyota Corolla’s
2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine and
2 mpg better than the Honda
Fit’s 1.5-liter 4-cylinder
engine, both also with manual
transmissions.
The all-new 2009
Ford F-150 – which just recently
was named Motor Trend magazine’s
Truck of the Year – achieves 3
mpg more than the Toyota Tundra
pickup on the highway and 1 mpg
better in the city with its
4.6-liter V-8 engine, compared
to Toyota’s 4.7-liter V-8. The
F-150’s larger 5.4-liter V-8
achieves 2 mpg better on the
highway than the Tundra’s larger
engine.
The 2009 Ford
Escape with new 2.5-liter
4-cylinder engine achieves 28
mpg on the highway, the same as
Toyota’s RAV4 and 1 mpg better
than the Honda CR-V, both with
4-cylinder engines, too.
The Ford
Expedition achieves 20 mpg on
the highway, beating Toyota
Sequoia’s 4.7-liter V-8 engine
by 3 mpg and its 5.7-liter V-8
by 1 mpg.

SmartGauge with EcoGuide, a unique new instrument cluster
execution that helps coach drivers to improve fuel efficiency.
“Offering consumers more fuel-efficient vehicle choices,
including maximizing the efficiency of our gasoline-powered
engines, improving and increasing our hybrid vehicle offerings
and increasing our use of fuel saving technologies such as
six-speed transmissions, is part of Ford’s plan to deliver
technology solutions for affordable fuel economy for millions,”
said Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s group vice president for Global
Product Development.
Improved gas engines
For 2010, Fusion and Milan will offer Ford’s all-new Duratec
2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 175 horsepower; an
enhanced 3.0-liter V-6 with 19 more horsepower than its

on the Fusion Sport model.
Fusion models equipped with the 2.5-liter I-4 engine are
expected to deliver at least 3 mpg better on the highway than
the Honda Accord and 2 mpg better than the Toyota Camry.
All are paired with six-speed transmissions for up to a 10
percent fuel economy improvement and a host of other
industry-first technologies aimed at improving performance while
gaining fuel economy.
Next-generation hybrid system
Ford’s next-generation hybrid propulsion system builds upon
the proven success of the Escape and Mariner hybrids, delivering
class-leading fuel economy for the all-new 2010 Ford Fusion and
Mercury Milan hybrids that debut later this year.
With the new arrivals, Ford will be the producer of the most
fuel-efficient mid-size sedans and SUVs in America – and the
Fusion Hybrid is expected to perform at least 5 mpg better on
the highway than the Toyota Camry hybrid.
The overall system upgrade allows the Ford Fusion and Mercury
Milan hybrids to operate longer at higher speeds in electric
mode. The hybrid vehicles can operate up to 47 mph in pure
electric mode, about twice as fast as some competitors. Plus,
the city driving range on a single tank of gas is expected to be
more than 700 miles.
“With the new Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan hybrids, we are
now able to offer even better range of travel on battery power
at a greater speed, thanks to a more efficient, seamless
transition between the battery-powered motor and gasoline-driven
engine,” Kuzak said. “These new hybrids will exceed expectations
on all fronts – fuel efficiency, comfort, convenience and
overall drivability.”
With the addition of the two new hybrid sedans, Ford will be
the largest domestic producer of hybrid vehicles in North
America. All Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan models will be built
at Ford’s Hermosillo (Mexico) Stamping and Assembly Plant.
SmartGauge with EcoGuide
Ford’s SmartGauge with EcoGuide, an innovative new instrument
cluster, provides real-time information to help drivers maximum
fuel efficiency.
Ford collaborated with IDEO and Smart Design, two world
leaders in helping consumers connect with technology, to develop
the instrument cluster. Job One was properly integrating the
driver with the cluster’s science and technology.
The driver is immediately engaged by the SmartGauge liquid
crystal display (LCD) screens, on either side of the
center-mounted analog speedometer, with a special greeting that
combines illumination and graphics.
EcoGuide then uses a multi-layered approach to coach the
driver to maximum fuel efficiency. A tutorial mode is built into
the display and helps the driver learn about the instrument
cluster and the hybrid in a whimsical way that does not
overpower.
For instance, drivers can choose one of four data screens to
choose the information level displayed during their drives. They
are:
Inform: Fuel level and battery charge status
Enlighten: Adds electric vehicle mode indicator and
tachometer
Engage: Adds engine output power and battery output
power
Empower: Adds power to wheels, engine pull-up threshold
and accessory power consumption
All levels can show instant fuel economy, fuel economy
history, odometer, engine coolant temperature, what gear the car
is in and trip data, including trip fuel economy, time-elapsed
fuel economy and miles to empty.
Update - FORD FUSION CHALLENGES JAPANESE
BRANDS AND WINS
Major Marketing Campaign to
Highlight Consumer Test Drive Results
Ford Fusion challenges Toyota
Camry and Honda Accord in a
head-to-head drive organized by
Car and Driver magazine for its
subscribers.
Consumers rate Ford Fusion with
all-wheel drive first in “Styling,”
“Handling,” “Performance,” and “Fun
to Drive” categories.
Test results will be foundation
of major, nationwide marketing
campaign that begins today.
Dearborn , Mich. , Jan. 4, 2007 – The
2007 Ford Fusion emerged the winner in
key areas like “styling,” “handling” and
“fun to drive” after a head-to-head
comparison test with Japanese sedans
organized for subscribers by Car and
Driver magazine. Now, Ford is
making the results the centerpiece of a
major, national marketing campaign for
the car.
“In its first year, the Ford Fusion
has been recognized by third parties
like J.D. Power and Associates,
Smart Money magazine, Strategic
Vision and the New York Times
for its styling, handling, quality and
value, and that’s helped turn it into a
sales success” said Barry Engle, general
manager, Ford Division Marketing. “Now,
the Fusion is an even better value and
has class-exclusive new options like
all-wheel drive, so we’re going directly
to consumers to show them just how good
the car is.”
More than 600 magazine subscribers
participated in the first ride and
drive, which was designed and presented
by Car and Driver magazine in
the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area
in mid-December 2006.
Consumers drove three vehicles: a
2007 Honda Accord EX-L V-6, a 2007
Toyota Camry XLE V-6 and a 2007 Ford
Fusion SEL AWD V-6 on a closed course.
Before the drive, consumers rated the
Honda and Toyota vehicles higher than
the Fusion. But after the drive,
opinions of the Fusion improved
dramatically, leveling the playing field
with the competition. Fusion also
emerged as the clear winner in key areas
including “Styling,” “Handling,” “Fun to
Drive” and “Performance.”
The results of the event will be
featured in a marketing campaign
breaking today in variety of national
media, including newspapers, cable and
network television, radio and the
Internet. The first television ad,
titled “Fusion Challenge,” touts the
Fusion’s winning results against the
Accord and Camry. The second television
spot, “Something Different” will offer
enthusiastic reactions from participants
in the drive and other ads will follow.
The print ads use the headline “This
test had a lot of turns. And one big
twist.” The campaign was created by
Ford’s agency, JWT Detroit.
Results of the consumer polls and
other information will be available on
the Web site:
www.fusionchallenge.com. The site
will also feature current sales and
marketing offers, Fusion product reviews
from MSN Autos, Yahoo!Autos and
Edmunds.com, and video commentary from
Fusion Challenge participants. The
second ‘Fusion Challenge’ will take
place at the end of January on the West
Coast.
“Over the past several years, we’ve
conducted numerous subscriber ride and
drive events and the results from this
program confirm the Ford Fusion’s well
earned place among the segment leaders,”
said Rob Houghtlin, vice president and
publisher, Car and Driver. “The
dramatic increase in brand perception
amongst the attendees was significant.”

Overview
Ford Fusion distinguishes itself in the most
competitive vehicle segment with its standout
exterior design and engaging driving dynamics.
Breathing a fresh attitude into the American midsize
car, Fusion brings to the segment good fuel economy,
advanced safety, clean emissions and roomy interior
space — all at an outstanding value.
For 2007, Fusion takes some other bold steps.
Front-seat side air bags and side-impact air
curtains will be made standard on all models shortly
after the 2007 model launch, as will an anti-theft
perimeter alarm system.
Fusion also enhances driver confidence — and sets
itself apart from competitors — by offering an
all-wheel drive system that optimizes traction on
slick surfaces or for improved handling in a curve.
And Fusion is ahead of that curve with its standard
audio input jack and available DVD-based navigation
system and SIRIUS satellite radio.
The Fusion takes a central position between the
award-winning Focus and the flagship Five Hundred
sedan. The strong, muscular three-bar chrome grille
sets the tone for a bold look in the midsize sedan
segment.
Fusion is available in S, SE and SEL trims and is
built in Hermosillo, Mexico.
Design and Equipment
The Ford Fusion is the company’s first fully
“digital” car. It was completely designed,
engineered and tested for manufacture in a digital
environment — using the most advanced design tools
available for precision, high quality and
efficiency.
By drawing on these new tools and the company’s
global product development resources, Fusion’s
engineering team was able to bring the car to market
faster than traditional vehicle-development
programs.
These new tools also helped the engineers that
reach their goal of maximizing the spaciousness for
all occupants to challenge the class leaders in key
interior dimensions such as front shoulder room,
rear-seat legroom and trunk space.
Fusion designers also worked hard to ensure
passengers can slip into the back seat with ease. In
a packaging exercise, the designers even donned size
14 shoes to confirm that someone with that foot size
could enter and exit without brushing the B-pillar
scuff plate or the back of the front seat. Their
goal was achieved by pushing the rear door as far
back toward the C-pillar as possible. It’s this kind
of attention to detail that contributes to the
overall package ingenuity of the Fusion, including
such standard ergonomic niceties as a
height-adjustable driver’s seat and a tilt and
telescope steering wheel.
In addition to carrying people in comfort, Fusion
is capable of making quick work of cargo. The roomy,
15.8-cubic-foot trunk boasts a flat load floor and
low liftover height with compact decklid hinges that
won’t crush boxes or groceries. The rear seats
feature a standard 60/40 split and fold-flat
function with spring assist, allowing pass-through
access to handle long items and provide
best-in-class storage space. What’s more, the
ability to handle extra-long items has been
increased for 2007 in the SE and the SEL, where a
fold-down front seat back is now standard.
A choice of three distinct interior themes allows
customers to personalize their driving environment.
Owners have a choice among carbon graphite, wood or
piano black accents. The inviting interior also has
optional leather-covered seating surfaces with
contrast stitching. Fusion’s interior has many
storage options, with a pop-up bin in the top of the
instrument panel, a clamshell armrest, six cup
holders, rear-seat armrests and one-touch 60/40
fold-flat rear seats.
On all models, a variety of high-end features is
available, including a tilt and telescope steering
wheel, heated front seats, and a six-disc, in-dash
CD player that also reads MP3-encoded audio discs. A
standard auxiliary audio input jack, available
SIRIUS satellite radio and a DVD-based navigation
system will all be available shortly after the 2007
model launches.
,.
Powertrain and Chassis
The availability of all-wheel drive on V-6 models of the SE and
the SEL is the big news for 2007. But it would not be the
achievement it is if Fusion did not have such solid underpinnings.
Fusion’s available all-wheel drive system was tuned with an
emphasis toward driving performance while also offering confident
all-weather driving. The system continuously monitors vehicle speed,
throttle input and steering angle to seamlessly deliver torque to
the appropriate wheel even before wheel slippage occurs. The system
also helps eliminate torque steer and helps balance the vehicle when
cornering.
Satisfying ride and rewarding handling begin with a stiff
chassis, and Fusion boasts torsional rigidity 12.7 percent higher
than the already outstanding base architecture. This allows the
four-wheel independent suspension to absorb driving harshness and
respond more precisely to steering inputs.
Four-wheel power disc brakes are standard, and a four-sensor,
four-channel anti-lock brake system (ABS) with electronic brake
force distribution is optional.
The soul of any car is its engine, and Fusion offers a choice of
Ford’s 2.3-liter, Duratec 23 inline four-cylinder (I-4) or
3.0-liter, Duratec 30 V-6. Both feature aluminum construction,
dual-overhead cams, four valves per cylinder, intake variable-cam
timing and electronic throttle control to deliver smooth, spirited
performance along with good fuel economy and emissions ratings.
The four-cylinder engine delivers 160 horsepower and can be
paired with a five-speed manual or — unusual in this segment — a
five-speed automatic transaxle. Also good news for the environment,
when mated to the automatic transaxle, the Duratec 23 I-4 is rated
as a Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV) in California. It is the
Ford brand’s third PZEV application, after the Escape Hybrid and
Focus PZEV. The standard Duratec 23 and five-speed manual and
automatic return 23 miles per gallon in the city and 31 mpg on the
highway.
For even more power, there’s the 221-horsepower, 3.0-liter V-6,
which is paired with an advanced six-speed automatic transaxle.
Fusion was the first car in its class to offer such a sophisticated
automatic. With this wide, 6:1 overall span, vs. 4.5:1 for a typical
five-speed, the six-speed automatic delivers impressive performance
as well as 20 mpg city, 28 mpg highway.
Safety and Security
Fusion benefits from some of the latest safety technology
available — from cutting-edge metallurgy to air bags. Shortly after
the 2007 model launches, front-seat side air bags and side-impact
air curtains will become standard on all models, as will an
anti-theft perimeter alarm system. Additional standard advanced
safety technology includes Ford’s Personal Safety System® with
dual-deployment front air bags, energy-absorbing safety belts and
load-limiting retractors.
An example of the lengths to which Ford engineers have gone to
enhance occupant protection can be seen in the steps they took
designing Fusion to meet stringent new side-impact tests.
Fusion’s B-pillars are made by welding two blanks of steel
end-to-end, resulting in a stronger top of the vehicle and more
flexible bottom. This facilitates energy absorption during a crash
below the level of the occupants. The strong steel structure at the
torso level and above helps prevent intrusion into the passenger
compartment.
