The vision for Ford’s truck team was clear: Redesign
America’s favorite truck inside and out to give customers
unrivaled capability, unprecedented choice and a host of smart,
game-changing features.
The result is the new 2009 Ford F-150, the new benchmark in
the full-size pickup segment from the industry’s truck leader –
which has built more than 33 million F-Series pickups since
1948.
The Ford truck team adopted a holistic, 360-degree approach
to revamping the new 2009 F-150 – from its segment-first
features to the tough new exterior highlighted by a dramatic
three-bar grille and more spacious, flexible and refined
interior, to the unparalleled choice of cab styles and trim
levels – including a new Platinum series that redefines truck
luxury.
The improvements are just as dramatic beneath the sheet
metal. A new high-strength, lighter-weight chassis is the
backbone that allows this tough truck to deliver more
horsepower, better fuel economy and safety, and additional
towing and payload capacity.
“The Ford F-150 is an American icon,” said Mark Fields,
Ford’s president of The Americas. “Ford is the truck leader, and
F-150 customers expect and demand the best truck on the market.
“Our team not only met those expectations, they exceeded them
with the new 2009 F-150,” Fields added. “With Ford’s product-led
transformation in full swing, the new F-150 could not have come
at a better time – for Ford and for our customers.”
In all, more than 1,000 Ford engineers, designers,
researchers and others worked together to develop the new 2009
F-150. The team drew inspiration by listening to Ford’s large
customer base.
“Before we started working on the new truck, we continued the
conversation with people who use these trucks every day for work
and play,” said Matt O’Leary, chief engineer of the 2009 F-150.
“We went to their ranches, their job sites and their homes,
making sure we crafted features that would improve their
ownership experiences and, really, their lives.”
The results will be clear to customers when the new 2009
F-150 rolls off assembly lines at Ford’s Dearborn (Mich.) Truck
Plant and Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo, Mo. – and as
the new F-150 goes on sale in dealer showrooms this fall.
Most Capable
Ford F-150 customers tackle tough jobs when they work and
play, and they need a full-size truck that rises to the
challenge. The current F-150 is already the most capable truck
on the market, but Ford’s truck team drove capability to new
levels with the 2009 model.
The improvement starts with the 2009 F-150’s fully boxed
frame constructed with hydro-formed and high strength steel side
rails. The lightweight frame delivers 10 percent more torsional
rigidity, which delivers increased durability and safety. The
sturdy chassis also paved the way for the new 2009 F-150 to
improve upon the current model’s class-leading towing and
hauling capability across all cab configurations.
“The new, improved chassis helps deliver additional payload
and towing capacity as well as improved fuel economy, which we
know is top of mind for customers,” O’Leary said.
Thanks to the strength of the frame and comprehensive package
of standard safety equipment, including side-curtain air bags,
the new F-150 is engineered to earn top safety ratings from the
National Highway Transportation Safety Administration and the
Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Complementing the modern frame is a high-tech suite of
features that ensures the F-150 is sure-footed and safe in all
driving and load conditions. The new F-150 offers segment-first
standard AdvanceTrac® with RSC® (Roll Stability Control) and
Trailer Sway Control plus available Rearview Camera Assist as
well as Integrated Trailer Brake Controller a segment-first on
light-duty pickups.
The interior of the new 2009 F-150 SuperCrew offers more
usable space for moving more people and gear thanks to a 6-inch
stretch that improves rear seat legroom and cargo capacity. A
mechanically articulated second-row seat flips up and out of the
way. Combined with a truly flat load floor, the feature gives
the new SuperCrew class leading 57.6 cubic feet of space behind
the front seats and can accommodate items up to 47.9 inches
tall, such as flat-screen TV that needs to be hauled from the
electronics store to home.
Most Choice
Ford’s F-Series may be America’s best-selling vehicle, but
one-size-fits-all does not apply to today’s truck buyer. From
the Texas rancher to the general contractor in Florida, F-150
customers have different needs and tastes.
In response, Ford’s truck team designed a truck that offers
more choice than any full-size truck on the market. With three
cab styles, four box options and seven unique trim levels, the
F-150 comes in 35 different configurations to meet the widest
range of customer needs and wants – all delivered with quality.
Customers can choose from the no-fuss XL workhorse, to the
sporty STX and off-road capable FX4, to the mid-range XLT. For
those looking for tough luxury, Ford offers the high-end Lariat
and King Ranch F-150 models.
2009 Ford
F-150 Platinum
New for the 2009 F-150 is the Platinum series, the most
luxurious F-150 ever and the answer to a perennial question:
Just how high-end do truck customers want to go?
The striking F-150 Platinum features a satin chrome grille
with fine mesh inserts, 10-way captain’s chairs upholstered with
top-quality leather, tuxedo stitching and embroidered logos on
the seatbacks. Satin gloss Lacrosse Ash wood grain accents and
real brushed aluminum panels give the dash, center console and
doors an upscale look and feel. Standard 20-inch, 16-spoke
polished aluminum wheels give the truck a commanding presence on
the road.
With more customers interested in personalizing their trucks,
Ford is offering the largest selection of wheels in the segment
with 13 offerings across the F-150 lineup.
Under the hood, the new F-150 will be powered by three modern
V-8 engines, mated to either a 4-speed or a new fuel-efficient
6-speed automatic transmission. The engines include:
5.4-liter, 3-valve Triton V-8, which
has been optimized for better performance with improved
horsepower and torque, and is capable of running on E85 (85
percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline), regular unleaded
gasoline or any blend in between.
4.6-liter, 3-valve V-8, which is new
for F-150. Both the 5.4-liter and 4.6-liter 3-valve V-8’s
utilize open valve injection. This unique feature improves
the flow of fuel into the combustion chamber, which results
in an increase in horsepower during towing and reduced
emissions.
4.6-liter, 2-valve V-8, a third V-8
choice in the line-up that delivers more horsepower with the
same fuel economy performance as the outgoing truck’s V-6.
This all-V-8 engine lineup delivers a fleet-average 1 mpg
improvement in fuel economy versus the outgoing F-150.
Diesel and EcoBoost gas turbo direct injection engines are
planned for F-150 in 2010 as well.
Most ‘Smart’ Features
Ford’s researchers spent thousands of hours listening to
truck buyers to gain inspiration for a host of smart new
features for the new 2009 Ford F-150.
It starts with the clever interior, which features a
flow-through console that has been lengthened by approximately 2
inches and is large enough to stow two or more laptop computers.
Special ridges are molded into the edges of the bin to
accommodate file folders. The console also has a multi-tiered,
removable tray and locks to protect valuables.
More than 30 storage areas are built into the interior,
ranging from a bin on the top of the instrument panel to a
number of small spaces designed to accommodate tools like cell
phones, MP3 players, PDAs and gate access cards.
A redesigned, more ergonomic shifter remains on the console.
New, larger buttons and switches are ergonomically designed and
within easy reach and view of the driver. A USB port and
auxiliary MP3 player input are conveniently mounted on the dash.
Two 12-volt outlets are located on the dash and center console.
Even the pickup box on the new F-150 breaks the mold with
clever and capable features the competition cannot match. The
class-leading cargo capacity of 65.5 cubic feet is only the
beginning of the story.
The F-150’s pickup box is made easier to use, more flexible
and accessible with such new features as Ford’s
industry-exclusive Tailgate and Box Side Steps, Stowable Bed
Extender and Cargo Management System.
“These features are impressive on their own. For the customer
who uses their pickup box five, six or seven times a day, these
innovations together make a huge difference,” O’Leary said.
That same kind of logic drove the team to include other
clever features on the truck, including Ford’s Easy Fuel™
Capless Fuel-Filler System. When fueling is completed and the
nozzle is removed, the system automatically seals shut, reducing
emissions.
The new 2009 Ford-150 also will allow truck customers to be
connected to the world like never before. Ford has been working
with Microsoft, Sony and SIRIUS to offer customers leading
technologies to help them stay connected with their lives while
on the road including:
Industry-exclusive Ford SYNC™, a
voice-activated, hands-free, in-vehicle communications and
entertainment system offers even more functionality for the
2009 model year, with 911 Assist and Vehicle Health Report.
SIRIUS Travel Link™ that when combined
with voice activated navigation will provide users with a
suite of data services including real-time traffic,
coast-to-coast weather conditions and fuel price information
for over 120,000 gas stations.
Voice-activated navigation that
integrates several functions, including voice recognition
destination entry, climate control and SIRIUS satellite
radio into one easy-to-use system, displaying them on an
8-inch touch screen display.
Sony audio system that features 700
watts of power, 5.1 surround sound and 10 Sony speakers and
amps and is certified by Sony to deliver a unique, rich
listening experience.
“We know how important the F-150 is to our customers,” said
O’Leary. “With the new 2009 F-150, we are delivering a
top-quality truck lineup that is second-to-none in capability,
features and a range of choices that will continue to make Ford
America’s favorite truck.”
FORD F-SERIES TURNS 60, STILL LEADING THE
PACK: HERE ARE 10 WAYS AMERICA’S TOP TRUCK
DELIVERS
On its Diamond Anniversary, the Ford
F-Series celebrates a tradition of
leadership and innovation. For six decades,
F-Series trucks have set the standard in
strength, durability and toughness. Ford
pioneered the pickup, gave it the first V-8
engine and Crew Cab and went on to create a
brand that has been the truck sales leader
for 30 years.
For 2008, the F-Series raises the bar
even further with ‘Built Ford Tough’
innovations and unmatched capability. Here’s
just a glimpse of why F-Series is still king
of the road:
1. More Choice – In
1974, Ford debuted the first F-Series
Super Cabs, fueling growth in the
personal use of pickup trucks. Today,
the Ford F-150 lineup offers the
industry’s widest variety of body
configurations – including three cab
choices, three box lengths, two box
styles and five unique series. The F-150
is the only pickup with a four-door
Regular Cab, so you can easily access up
to 17 cu. ft. of storage behind the
front seat.
Ford further expands the leading
lineup of more than 60 unique models and
configurations with the addition of the
2008 Ford F-150 Lariat Limited and XL
Super Crew. Why so many choices? Ford
customers need different tools for
different jobs. The competition only
offers half as many combinations as the
Ford F-150.
2. Powerful Pickup –
Twenty-five years after the F-Series
debuted its first diesel engine, the
Super Duty is more powerful, quieter and
cleaner than ever – thanks to the new
6.4-liter Power Stroke® V-8 Turbo
Diesel. With its 6.4-liter displacement
and dual-stage turbochargers, the new
Power Stroke cranks out a maximum 350
horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. For
applications such as snow plowing that
need the low-end muscle, it can produce
its peak torque at only 2,000 rpm. And
thanks to the precision of the Piezo-actuated
fuel injectors, the engine will start in
less than 2 seconds at -20F
The Super Duty uses Ford Clean Diesel
Technology™ including a Diesel
Particulate Filter to trap soot
particles and is designed to use the
latest ultra-low sulfur fuel. It burns
cleaner, with less odor and helps the
emissions system last longer. With
particulate emissions equivalent to
those of a gasoline engine with similar
size and power, the 6.4-liter Power
Stroke diesel is Ford’s cleanest,
quietest truck diesel ever.
3. Unmatched Capability –
Nearly 90 percent of F-Series
Super Duty customers tow and even more
haul with their trucks. Ford offers the
only purpose-built heavy-duty truck
platform, helping it easily lead its
class in capability. Ford threw out the
rules for heavy duty trucks with the
first Class 4 pickup – the all-new 2008
Ford F-450 – built for customers who
demand the most. The F-450 tows up to a
whopping 24,500 lbs. (more than 12
tons), out-towing its nearest competitor
by more than 8,000 lbs. and delivering
class-leading payload capacity of 6,200
lbs.
Among light duty trucks, no truck can
match F-150’s 11,000-lbs. towing
capacity or its best-in-class payload of
up to 3,080 lbs. – a 1,000-lb. payload
advantage versus the nearest competitor.
F-150’s capability leadership can be
measured down to the bolts. Ford has the
largest, strongest bed and key
suspension bolts in the segment to hold
up to the abuse of customers who move
extreme loads.
4. Eyes in the Back of Your Bed
– The 2008 Ford F-150 and
F-Series Super Duty are the only pickups
with a Reverse Camera System that
displays through the rearview mirror, a
natural place for the driver to look
while in reverse. The new system,
mounted in the tailgate handle bezel, is
activated when the vehicle is shifted
into reverse. The wide-angle camera
provides a bird’s-eye view of the
trailer ball, while the built-in
distance guide on the video display
makes the system ideal for trailer
hook-up or backing up to a loading dock.
The system stays on for 3 seconds after
shifting out of reverse, allowing
customers to confirm the security of the
trailer hookup. The industry’s only
other truck application requires drivers
to look down at the navigation screen as
they’re reversing. The Reverse Camera
System also is available on the Ford
F-150, Expedition, Lincoln Mark LT and
Navigator.
5. More Towing Convenience
– Adding to the F-Series Super Duty’s
towing abilities is the optional
TowCommand™ System, which premiered with
the 2005 Super Duty. It features the
industry’s first integrated trailer
brake controller and the optional
TorqShift™ five-speed automatic
transmission. The system continuously
receives information from the ABS module
and from the powertrain controller, and
adapts trailer braking based on vehicle
speed.
Industry-exclusive PowerScope
integrated power-folding and
power-telescoping mirrors also help
towers handle loads with more ease and
convenience. The large mirrors extend
outward up to 2.75 inches and feature a
power-adjustable main mirror with a
manually adjusted spotter mirror to
provide greater visibility for parking
and towing.
6. Tailgate Step –
Ford’s new exclusive Tailgate Step is
fully integrated into the tailgate of
the 2008 F-Series Super Duty and
virtually invisible when not in use. To
use the flip-down step, simply drop the
tailgate into the down position, grab
the bottom step, pull it straight out
and drop it into the step position – all
in one easy motion. A unique grab handle
folds up and out of the tailgate to
provide extra support when using the
Tailgate Step, supporting up to 350
pounds.
7. Fuel-Saving 4x4 Capability
– Since Ford introduced its
first 4x4 pickup in 1959, F-Series has
spurred growth in recreational off-road
driving and in the personal use of
pickup trucks. Today, nearly half of all
F-150 customers opt for 4x4 capability.
The Ford F-150 features the segment’s
only 4x4 system with integrated wheel
ends, which automatically disconnect
when the truck is shifted into 4x2 and
re-connect when it is shifted into
four-wheel mode. The system reduces fuel
consumption by up to a half gallon per
mile in 4x2 driving conditions compared
to more traditional systems used by
competitive trucks.
8. Storage Within Easy Reach –
New for 2008, Ford’s innovative MidBox
Storage System – a customizable box
between the cab and bed – provides
lockable storage for tools and other
valuable items. The rugged, steel
construction features double-paneled
doors that are accessible from both
sides of the vehicle and lock and unlock
with the same key that operates the
driver’s door. Latches feature
double-bitted keys and lock tumblers
designed to provide additional security.
Dent-resistant exterior door panels wear
factory-sourced Ford door handles for a
well-integrated look and feature
commercial grade sealing for a weather-
and dust-resistant interior compartment.
The MidBox option is available on F-150
Regular Cab and Super Cab models.
9. The Ultimate Tool Box –
The 2008 Ford F-150 works harder and
smarter with a new factory-installed
feature that offers secure storage of
all types of cargo. The base Cargo
Management System comes with two side
rails and four cleats. Additional
options include a pair of bins, a pair
of crossbars and a header bar. Extra
bins and crossbars are easily added when
extra capability and flexibility is
needed.
In the “Built Ford Tough” spirit,
Ford engineered the system to handle
more load and last longer than
competitive systems. For example, the
easily adjustable, cast-aluminum cleats
can hold more than 600 pounds.
Side-mounted, blow-molded plastic tool
bins can hold up to 60 pounds and
feature double wall construction. This
provides a water-tight thermal barrier
that keeps beverages cold when used as a
cooler.
10. One Tough Customer –
The highly acclaimed 2004 Ford F-150
debuted with a fully boxed frame to
deliver improved ride, handling and
quietness. Four years later, F-150’s
frame remains the strongest in the
segment and provides the foundation for
improved durability, driving dynamics
and ride refinement. With a driving feel
that is designed to be plush yet
connected to the road, the F-150 has a
front suspension system that readily
absorbs bumps but stands strong against
steering forces. The frame also
contributes to the F-150’s leading
payload and towing capability.

Tough Truck Heritage
In 1948, Ford introduced the F-1 pickup to a booming
post-war America and marked Ford’s first all-new line of
post-war civilian vehicles. Advertised as “Built
Stronger to Last Longer,” the
F-Series became a symbol of America’s economic
prosperity, going to work on the job site, at the
factory and on the farm.
Moving forward, the F-Series’ “Excitedly Modern” and
“Totally Different” design infused car-like elements
into the light truck market. With its smooth body
contours, integrated headlamps and innovations like the
one-piece windshield, the F-Series launched a phenomenon
that would see the scope of light trucks expand from the
farm and factory to the American driveway.
While capability is still paramount, evidenced by
F-150’s class-leading trailer tow and payload
capabilities, light duty pickup trucks have evolved
significantly during the past decade. The
F-150 has been leading the pack, offering creature
comforts and innovations that were once found
exclusively on passenger vehicles.
“Ford trucks continue to lead with smart solutions to
make any job easier,” said Crowley. “And we’re not
letting up. We are hard at work on the next generation
of Built Ford Tough trucks with breakthrough innovations
that will lead the way for the next 60 years.”
The F-Series continues today as America’s favorite
vehicle, approaching 33 million sales since its
introduction in 1948. F-Series has topped the truck
sales charts for the past 30 consecutive years and
boasts the recognition of being America’s best-selling
vehicle for 26 of those 30 years.

also has upgraded the F-150 line for 2007
with a long list of new options, features and
equipment, including a tire pressure monitoring
system, enhanced seats, new factory-installed
accessories and new colors.
The F-150 continues to offer the industry’s
widest variety of body configurations, including
three cab choices, three box lengths, two box styles
and five unique series: the entry-level F-150 XL,
fun and athletic F-150 STX, all-purpose F-150 XLT,
powerful F-150 FX4, and the luxurious F-150 Lariat –
to which the King Ranch version adds even more
luxury. All cabs feature four doors for easy access.
With a maximum tow rating of 10,500 pounds when
properly equipped and maximum payload capacity of
3,050 pounds, the F-150 is the most capable
full-size pickup under 8,500 pounds. It is built in
Norfolk, Va., Kansas City, Mo. and in Dearborn,
Mich.
Design and Equipment
Tall-shouldered and proud, the F-150 profile
features a self-assured, “planted” stance. The bold
front end conveys strength with quad-circle-styled
headlamps, designed in clusters, and incorporates a
wrap-around fascia treatment that communicates
refined sophistication and precision. The front
doors feature Ford’s signature stepped-down truck
beltline.
Inside, F-150 boasts passenger comfort and
head-turning style. Three different instrument
cluster designs give each series a distinctive look.
All models feature an upscale two-tone instrument
panel.
The flow-through center console gives customers
the option of two captain’s chairs with a floor
shifter on FX4 and Lariat models. The floor shifter,
another F-150 first, is a sophisticated design,
detailed in warm steel and chrome. Vehicles equipped
with a 40/20/40-split-front-bench seat have a
different instrument panel center stack optimized
for middle-passenger legroom.
The F-150 offers the industry-first modular
overhead rail system that allows owners to customize
interior storage options to suit their individual
needs. With it, occupants may easily snap in
additional modules, such as first-aid kits,
toolboxes, flashlights and two-way radio holders.
Additional features that are new for 2007 include
an auxiliary audio input jack and DVD-based
navigation system. Freshened XLT and Lariat chrome
packages feature a chrome grille, 18-inch chrome
wheels, 5-inch chrome tubular running boards, chrome
exhaust tip and chrome mirror caps (Lariat).
A chrome bug shield and chrome slip-on exhaust
tip are two new factory-ordered accessories
available on all models, in addition to a marine
carpet bed rug.
Powertrain and Chassis
F-150 offers three engine choices: a 4.2-liter
V-6 engine, a 4.6-liter Triton™ V-8 and the
top-of-the-line 5.4-liter, three-valve Triton V-8.
The 5.4-liter Triton V-8 engine is designed with
three valves per cylinder, variable cam timing and a
host of other features that provide increased power
along with a quieter operation and improved fuel
efficiency. It delivers 300 horsepower at 5,000 rpm
and 365 pound-feet of torque at 3,750 rpm. A
flex-fuel version that can use up to 85 percent
ethanol is also available.
Segment-first torque-based electronic throttle
control uses driver input from the accelerator pedal
to actively modulate the torque at the drive wheels.
The technology produces a seamless and consistent
engine response, improved fuel economy and enhanced
integration of vehicle systems, such as the
transmission, variable camshaft timing, vehicle
speed control and idle speed control.
Engineering advances in the F-150 lead to
exceptional handling, ride and quietness. The fully
boxed frame with hydroformed front rails is the
strongest in its class and reduces shake and shudder
on rough roads. Liquid-filled engine mounts, or “hydromounts,”
on the V-8 engine stifle much of the engine’s noise
and vibration before it can reach the passenger
compartment.
A rack- and-pinion steering system – the largest
and strongest ever used on a Ford vehicle – was
engineered to provide excellent steering response.
Both 4x2 and 4x4 models use coil-on-shock,
long-spindle, double-wishbone front suspension. The
suspension reduces unsprung weight to help provide
better ride and stability on choppy, broken
surfaces.
The Hotchkiss-design rear suspension has been
optimized with rear shock absorbers placed outboard
of the frame rails – a segment exclusive – for a
smoother ride and improved control of body lean. The
shock position also provides better control of axle
“skipping” and “skating” that can happen on
washboard-type surfaces.
Safety and Security
The strong hydroformed front frame rails are
built to help manage crash forces. In an impact,
these areas of the frame are designed to collapse in
an accordion fashion, dissipating energy before it
reaches the passenger compartment.
As a result, F-150 is the only pickup in its
class to earn the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration’s 5-star rating for driver and
right-front-passenger frontal crash rating and
receive a “Good” rating in frontal offset crash
testing performed by the Insurance Institute for
Highway Safety.
The F-150’s portfolio of safety features includes
the Ford Personal Safety System® and
occupant-sensing technology for the first-row
passenger. Whether it’s a pair of work gloves, a
child or an adult sitting there, the technology
determines if the air bag should be on or off. The
frontal air bags offer multiple deployment levels
that tailor inflation force to the severity of the
crash, the driver’s safety-belt use and the driver’s
seat position, as determined by a sensor mounted to
the seat track.
Four-wheel, vented-disc, anti-lock brakes are
standard. F-150 4x2 V-8 models can be ordered with
Traction Assist to improve acceleration and
stability on slippery surfaces.
